ISLAND ESCAPES · WORLDWIDE
Find your island.
From Tenerife and Santorini to Mallorca, Madeira and Malta — the best boat trips, beaches and day tours on the world’s favourite islands, with prices and reviews for each.
One of a kind
Islands that look like nowhere else.
A beach and a boat trip, every island has. A volcano you ride a cable car up, a caldera the whole island watches the sun drop into, a forest older than the Ice Age — those belong to these three.
The caldera
Santorini
Santorini is the rim of a drowned volcano. Whitewashed villages cling to cliffs that drop straight into a flooded crater, the caldera fills with colour every evening as the sun goes down behind the islets, and the boats run out to the warm volcanic springs at its centre.

The volcano
Tenerife
Mount Teide is the highest peak in Spain and the third-tallest volcano on Earth, and a cable car carries you most of the way up it. Below, the south coast holds some of the best whale and dolphin water in Europe, with resident pilot whales offshore the whole year round.

The garden in the Atlantic
Madeira
Madeira is a single green mountain rising sheer out of the ocean. Walking paths follow centuries-old levada water channels into a laurel forest left over from the age of the dinosaurs, and the peaks climb clear above the clouds for sunrise.

Which island is right for you?
Two dozen islands, very different days. Beaches if you want to slow down, volcanoes if you want to walk, white villages if you came for the view. Here’s the short way to narrow it down.
By archipelago
Pick an island group.
The Canaries for winter sun and volcanoes. The Greek islands for white villages and blue water. The Balearics for the beaches. Madeira for the green peaks. Malta for the history. The Italian islands for the south.
Greece · Crete
Crete is a country pretending to be an island.
The biggest of the Greek islands runs 260km end to end: the Samaria Gorge cutting down to the Libyan Sea, the Minoan palace at Knossos, pink sand at Elafonissi and Balos, and Venetian harbour towns at Chania and Rethymno.

The water
The whole trip is about the colour of the sea.
Every island here sits in water that turns from deep blue to glass-clear turquoise the moment you reach a cove. Boat days, sea caves, hidden beaches and long swims — the part of an island holiday no photo quite prepares you for.

A continent shrunk to one island.
They call Gran Canaria a miniature continent: golden dunes rolling into the Atlantic at Maspalomas, pine-forest peaks around Roque Nublo, white villages folded into the mountains, and a city — Las Palmas — with a proper beach in the middle of it.
