Croatia

Croatia was recently voted as the ‘hot’ (as in ‘have to go there!’) destination for 2005 by Lonely Planet's worldwide employees. Lonely Planet's annual survey was conducted by Don George, Lonely Planet's Global Travel Editor. Don George considers that, ‘Croatia’s appeal was its unique combination of culture, history, cuisine, accessibility and affordability.’

The wars that broke up the old Yugoslavia have become a distant, if tragic memory, and an increasing number of tourists are rediscovering the delights of Croatia. Author, Jeanne Oliver loves the country because of ‘The beaches, rolling hills, typical fishing ports, the food and the people’.

Croatia's idyllic Dalmatian islands, the tumbling cascades in Plitvice National Park, the marble streets of medieval Dubrovnik and Diocletian’s amazing Palace in Split all contribute to Croatia's soaring popularity.

Jeanne also considers that Croatia is distinctive because ‘It’s a new country and still strugging for its footing. It wants to retain its traditional identity without getting swallowed up by Europe yet it wants to be a part of Europe.’

Jeanne has identified the following top 5 things to see or do in Croatia:

1 Dubrovnik

2 Swimming in Crveni Otok

3 Hiking in Paklenica Park

4 Biking on Mljet

5 Doing the nightlife of Hvar
