Island Skiing Radical Winter Fun in Greenland![]() Ever had a deep urge to ski an alien land, unspoilt and fresh, totally different from anywhere your mates brag about? Consider the astounding island country of Greenland. Officially still within the Kingdom of Denmark, Greenland is part of the north American continent, and is the world's largest island. With snow falling practically year-round here, and very little tourism, the opportunities to ski virgin territory are quite awesome. Greenland also offers an amazing range of winter activities, including dogsledding, hiking, mountaineering, snowmobiling, diving and kayaking. The high season for skiing and winter activities in Greenland is from March to April each year, but some summer skiing is available at the top of a the glacier near the town of Maniitsoq. Get a great online last minute ski deal and let get some advanced virgin snow skiing on the go. Winter Activity Areas of GreenlandBoth chilly in temperature (vary from -9C = 16F to 7C = 45F) and warm in hospitality, the city of Nuuk is home to about 15,000 natives. Air Iceland and Air Greenland provide regular flights to and around the island. Nuuk has a ski lift rising 1,100m into the mountains, with many cross-country trails in beautiful surroundings. Two smaller towns, Sisimiut and Ilulissat, are home to about 5,000 residents each. The area surrounding Sisimiut has exceptional cross-country skiing services which are run by the town government, and a mountain called "Solbakken" (the Sunny Hill) with a good ski lift is just outside the town, and is perfect for alpine skiing and snowboarding. Ilulissat is quite near an incredible glacier and ice fjord, listed on UNESCO's World Heritage sites. Ice climbing and snowmobiling are great fun here, along with kayaking and even ice-diving. Maniitsoq (pop. 2,800) and Uummannaq (pop. 1,300) are perfect destinations for heli-skiing and other extreme winter sports. Because these two areas are at lower altitudes than European heli-skiing areas, the lack of oxygen is far less of a problem here, and will leave you with far more energy and good spirits. Arctic Circle RaceThe world's most grueling ski challenge is called the Arctic Circle Race, and is held near Sisimiut every year (23 March 2012 is next). Over 100 racers from 10+ countries compete each year for three days over the 160 kilometer course. The terrain is rough and the scenery amazing, and the physical challenge of this race is unparalleled. Although all compete to win, many just hope to finish! |
