Sailing Fundamentals

Sailing Fundamentals

by Gary Jobson
Written by America's foremost instructional authority, the new edition of Sailing Fundamentals combines the training programs of the American Sailing Association and the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary. The official learn-to-sail manual of the American Sailing Association, it is also used in the programs of many yacht clubs, colleges, and sailing groups. Unlike most introductory sailing books, which reflect the biases and idiosyncrasies of their authors, Sailing Fundamentals has been extensively pretested by ASA professional instructors to ensure that it offers the fastest, easiest, most systematic way to learn basic sailing and basic coastal cruising. This book covers every aspect of beginning sailing -- from hoisting sail to docking and anchoring -- and specifically prepares the learner to qualify for sailing certification according to international standards.

Sailing Charters - Footloose

CLEARWATER, Fla., Dec. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Footloose Sailing Charters today announced an expansion into the South Pacific with the addition of two bases in New Zealand and one in Tonga. The bases in New Zealand will be located in Auckland and Bay of Islands while the new location in Tonga will be on the island of Vava'u. Reservations are now being accepted for charters in all destinations on a bareboat fleet ranging from 30- to 46-feet and including a mix of monohulls and catamarans. "It is very fitting that as Footloose celebrates its 10th anniversary we are able to open up the South Pacific to Footloose charter customers," commented Raul Bermudez, vice president of charter of sales and marketing. "Footloose has been providing the right equipment at the lowest cost for 10 years and now this combination can be enjoyed in not only the British Virgin Islands, but also the exotic South Pacific."

Footloose Offers New Zealand -- Cruise the Bay of Islands & Hauraki Gulf

Sailors can now cruise the remarkable coastline of New Zealand known for its variety of majestic mountains, white sand beaches and many sheltered harbors while enjoying Footloose value and service. Sail in the Bay of Islands with 500 miles of coastline, which are sheltered by over 86 islands, all offering a new adventure. Highlights range from a night in historic Russell, the first capital of New Zealand, to a sail up to Whangaroa Harbour that offers dramatic waterfalls and impressive headlands. Sailors may also explore these beautiful waters by departing from our base in Auckland, the City of Sails. Visit Great Barrier Island, which offers a striking natural harbor and proceed onto Kawau Island and historic Mansion House Bay.

The Footloose fleet will provide a choice of six different models ranging from 30- to 40-foot monohulls and 36- and 41-foot catamarans. Each yacht is designed for cruising comfort and completely outfitted at the highest level.

The weather is great for sailing with the temperatures ranging from a comfortable 75F to 86F degrees between January and April, with stronger breezes later in the season. June through September brings stronger winds and cooler temperatures. Predictable winds and line-of-sight navigation is the norm.

The base in Auckland is a short taxi transfer from the airport, and if you are sailing from Opua in the Bay of Islands, you may take regular coach service from Auckland or fly into Keikeri with a short taxi ride to Opua Wharf.

A Combination of Footloose Value and Exotic Tonga

Footloose will now offer the crystal blue waters of Tonga, along with the service and value gained through delivering 10 years of sailing charters in the Caribbean. From the beautiful island of Vava'u, sailors can explore over 40 anchorages within an easy day's sail. These perpetually calm waters boast visibility ranging from 100 to 150 feet. Whether above or below the surface, a feast of color awaits the sailor. Sail to Nuapapapu and explore the enchanting Mariners Cave, only accessible through an underwater arch. Head to Vaka'eitu and snorkel the brilliant coral gardens and onto Euakafa where you'll discover ancient tombs. Offshore the deeper waters are a breeding ground for humpback whales between July and November. The Footloose fleet in Tonga consists of six different models ranging from 28- to 46-foot monohulls and 38- and 41-foot catamarans.

The sailing conditions are typical trade winds of 15-25 knots with an annual temperature of 75F degrees. Guests fly into Vava'u and the base is a 15-minute ride from the airport.

Footloose is also located in the British Virgin Islands. For more information, contact Footloose Sailing Charters at 1-800-814-7245 or visit the web site at www.footloosecharters.com .
